Prayer – Why do we pray?

Why do we pray?
God calls us to pray
Luke 18:1

1 Then He spoke a parable to them,  that men always ought to pray and not lose heart

 Don’t give up!!!!!

I Thessalonians 5:10-18

11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Don’t stop praying!!!!!

Why should we keep going on? Why should we even bother when things don’t seem to change? Why does it seem that our prayers fall on deaf ears?

In the previous two verses, God is telling us that we can trust Him.

We might not always see what He is doing. We might not always see instant results.

But God is there and He is working, behind the scenes on our behalf

A) God sees the motives of our hearts
1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

B) Jesus is our access to the Throne

Acts 20:28
28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

Ephesians 1:7 We have redemption through His blood – Sins are forgiven

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Ephesians 2:13 We have reconciliation through His blood – We are brought near

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

Hebrews 4:16 We have reception through His blood – We can bow before God

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 10:19

19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus

Through His blood the barrier of sin is removed
Revelation 7:14

14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.”
So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

God sees us through the blood of Jesus. He is our unbroken access to God
 Hebrews 10:1-4 Animal sacrifices are insufficient

5-10 Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will

11-25 Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

C) The Holy Spirit prays on our behalf
Romans 8:26-28

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

We as believers are commanded to pray
We face the same problems now that the disciples faced 2,000 years ago

Luke 11:1

 1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

The sense and nonsense of prayer
When we pray sometimes, especially when we have problems with prayer we tend to give a grocery list of things we would like or things that we think we need and many times we repeat things day in and day out. We never open our hearts to God
We never just talk to Him. Sometimes we do all the talking but we don’t allow Him the chance to speak to us

God says:
Call unto Me
Jeremiah 33:3

3 ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

The verb “call” in Greek is in the imperative sense
It is a command from God
God is saying “(I want you to) call unto Me”
Before they call I will answer

Isaiah 65:24-25

24 “ It shall come to pass
      That before they call, I will answer;
      And while they are still speaking, I will hear.
       25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
      The lion shall eat straw like the ox,
      And dust shall be the serpent’s food.
      They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,”
      Says the LORD.

The condition that will be on the earth during the millennium
or in the new heaven and the new earth
Matthew 6:32

32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

He knows what we want before we ask it but we are celled to ask Him
When this time comes He will answer before we call
This expresses the truth that their will be no sorrow between petition and praise
Praise will be continuous
This verse condenses the promises of Isaiah

6 “ The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
      The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
      The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
      And a little child shall lead them.
       7 The cow and the bear shall graze;
      Their young ones shall lie down together;
      And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
       8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole,
      And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den.
       9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,
      For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD
      As the waters cover the sea.
       10 “ And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,
      Who shall stand as a banner to the people;
      For the Gentiles shall seek Him,
      And His resting place shall be glorious.”
       11 It shall come to pass in that day
      That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time
      To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
      From Assyria and Egypt,
      From Pathros and Cush,
      From Elam and Shinar,
      From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

Pray with a heart of praise. In good times and in bad. Pray thankfully before God answers because He will. Pray for others because when we pray for the blessing of others we always get blessed in the process
