Prayer – The Anxieties of prayer

The anxieties of prayer

These days our society has become a people who expect something immediately to happen whenever we pray. We expect immediate answers for our requests
We experience anxiety when things don’t happen like we have been lead to believe
even when God is at work in our lives especially when it doesn’t happen as fast as we feel it should

The anxiety regarding God’s purpose

God has a reason for our existence

Why is this happening to me?
Why is God allowing this to happen to me?
This usually indicates a certain time of testing for learning or a time when we need to hear something from God
Romans 8:28 is an easy passage to quote but a hard one to apply

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose
As children of God we do not always know what to pray for or how to pray but we can know the purpose of God
What the Holy Spirit desires to accomplish
“All things” primarily refers to the “sufferings of the present time”
All circumstances will work together in cooperation for the believer’s good
Sometimes it is hard to understand what God is doing in our lives
We usually like to know what is going on at all times but we are called to walk in faith
God is not obliged to give us the answer for anything (Romans 9:20)

20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”

All we need to know is that His purpose is for our good (Romans 8:31 -32)

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

God is God and our bodies belong to Him
We are called to give ourselves to Him (Romans 12:1-2)

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

God is perfectly capable of tasking care of His property
Since I gave Him my body, I am responsible to take care of this body
but it is up to God as to how long I am to remain in this body
We must remember that God knows what He is doing
He is too wise to make mistakes and too kind to ever do something cruel
If we trust God with our soul we should also trust Him with everything else

2) The anxiety regarding God’s patience

God has time for us

We are always in a
God is not
Often we have time restraints and requirements
God is above time
We always have a problem with waiting
James 1:1-8

James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

“When you fall into tribulation”
trials are outward circumstances, conflicts, sufferings, and troubles encountered by all
Trials are not pleasant and may be exhausting and grievous but believers are to consider them as opportunities for rejoicing – a hard feat no matter who it is sometimes
Troubles and difficulties are a toll used to refine and purify our faith, produce patience
I Peter 1:7

that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

The testing of our faith
This means “tested” or” approved” not debased
The aim of testing is not to destroy or afflict but to purge and refine
He is saying “Count it all joy when you fall into
not out of temptations
In everything give thanks”
Here God is building patience in our lives
and we must realize that God has a beautiful plan He is working out in our lives

Exodus 2:11-25
Hebrews 11:24-25
Moses spent 40 years in the wilderness before he saw the burning bush (Ex 3)
He couldn’t see what God was doing in his life for these 40 years but Moses was going to be responsible for leading the Israelite nation in the wilderness
God needed someone who could lead these people through those hard and desperate times. He needed someone who would be able to show them how to survive in the wilderness. The only way for that to happen was to have someone who had lived there for some time and who had encountered every problem that came up

3) The anxiety regarding God’s perspective

God sees our problems and concerns

How does what is happening to me fit into the overall scheme of things?
Prayer is something that we know we need to do but it can be a battle to find the time
Satan knows that if he disrupts our prayer time with God it will hinder and hurt us
Acts 16
Paul had a burden to take the gospel to Asia Minor
Twice the Spirit told him “No”
It would have been easy for Paul to experience anxiety or become discouraged
But he followed the Spirit’s leading and it soon worked out
Our anxiety is to be able to fit everything together
We see God at work in our lives, but we don’t always know how or why
God is taking His time because He is building character

God always answers prayer
even though we might not see it until after it happens
We must always trust Him to do His work in our lives

4) The anxiety regarding God’s provision

God has made a way for us

How is God going to take care of me?

Is what is happening to me from God or from something that will take me from Him?
God is supplying us with all we need so we can do what He wants and wills for us
Healing – Healing even by a physician is faith healing
God helps us through prayer and medicine
James 5

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

God has already provided the medicine and the physician for you
but we still need to pray
He knows our best and He will always make sure the best for us is what happens to us I Corinthians 10:12-13

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
