Genesis is the Greek title applied to this book from the word “Beginning” from the Septuagint and the Hebrew title “Bereishit” means “In the beginning.”
v1. In the beginning God.
We could stop right there and spend an eternity on just Who God is, what His purpose is and what does it have to do with us. This book war written by a Hebrew for a Hebrew nation and it speaks first to just who God is in relation to them as a nation. We have the blessed hindsight of 20/20 so we see how it relates to mankind and the universe as a whole. This book tells us the beginning of time and our universe as we know it.
Moses wrote this book, not as an apologetic work as to the belief in God, but in the mindset and assumption that the Hebrew people already had.
1. God is real
Remember, the writing of this book takes place after the Hebrew people have seen wonderful miracles that can only be explained by the work of God and they have seen Him in action
2. God created everything
Isa 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
Isa 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
Isa 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
The creation account includes everything. From the smallest animal to the biggest galaxies. From Adam (1:26-27) to angels (Job 38:4-11)
We have all looked up at the night sky and wondered at the stars and planets out there in trying to wrap our heads around this galaxy we call home. Just recently the Voyager satellite sent reading back to earth that it had left our known galaxy, 35 years later.
Moses wrote this book in order for his people, and us to know just who made all of that wonder and why
We can know God only through three ways in our 4D world.
A. His Name
This is not God’s name but it was used to refer to God as well as to other false gods.
This is a plural title that means “I’m” and speaks of more than one. It also means plural majesty and denotes greatness.
B. His characteristics
We see this through Jesus Christ, although in this setting it is through interactions with His people.
C. The Holy Spirit
The Spirit is the 5th Dimension and outside of our universe but also inside our universe at the same time
In Verse 1 God is introduced to us and we see the work of creation
1.In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that [it was] good: and God divided the light from the darkness.1 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.2
Light is created. What is interesting is the face that the Hebrew word used for light “ohr” means “enlightenment or illumination” and this light is the only thing called good “tov.” This speaks to Godly light because He is the source of all substance, not the sun. It could be thought of as the Shekinah glory of God or illumination that is suitable for us to see by.
The lights in v14 are the heavenly light “mohrot” or meteorites, stars that are placed in the heavens. This is a different kind of light.
The light in the first few verses is an exact opposite of the darkness that had existed before in verse 2.
That darkness “choshek” means negative, blindness, ignorance and not the word that means opposite of day, which was “lailah” or night time.
The light will not be necessary in Revelation (v21-22) because “Choshek” will not be present. God will once again be our Light.
This also speaks to the Light of the world, Jesus Christ.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.1 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all [men] through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but [was sent] to bear witness of that Light. 9 [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:2 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
God created the universe from nothing. He created us from something…..dirt.
We were created in a 4 dimensional world and we are subject to the laws and boundaries created by God. God created us in His image “Tzelem” and He created us with a duality within or spirit/soul which means that we have a connection to the Light “ohr” because good “ohr” and evil “choshek” are spiritual. Only mankind has the capacity to know God through His Spirit and there is only one way to God…..Jesus Christ!!!
God sent His Son to be the Light of the world

This Light delivers from the darkness
Psa 107:10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
Psa 107:11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
Psa 107:12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
Psa 107:13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

This Light condemns
We were once in that darkness. Without hope (void) The unsaved man can’t comprehend this Light. The unsaaved man wants no part of this Light
Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Joh 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
because the unsaved man has been blinded
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Eph 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
This Light exposes the darkness
God divided the light from the darkness. We are called to keep ourselves seperated from the darkness. We can’t leave the world but we can keep the world out of us.
1Jo 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Jo 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1Jo 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
We are also called to walk in the Light
Eph 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Eph 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Eph 5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
Eph 5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
Eph 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
This Light calls His chosen
1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
The Spirit of God hovers over us like a mother hen, waiting for us. He will not force Himself upon us
Jesus Christ came to die for us. He died for all but not all will accept Him
