Genesis 11: v1-3 Slimy Bricks or Stones of God

1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

Her we see the first “United Nations.” Now the whole earth was together, they had one language and one speech. They were probably in many ways like their ancestors before the flood

Genesis 6

1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Notice also that this generation had what they called their “mighty men of renown” just like Nimrod

2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

4And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Man uses bricks and slime to build. Anything that we can do on our own, so to speak is nothing but crumbling bricks and our actions, without God are nothing but slimy, useless, and sticky.

We need to build on the solid rock – Jesus Christ!!!

But many times we end up doing the opposite. We get into a good place, surrounded by goodness and prosperity and what do we do?

We forget about God. “That’s OK God, I can take it from here!!”

“I’ll be all right, thanks for all the help but I’ve got it now!”

and what we are left with is nothing but bricks and slime, the second best and we loose out on our blessing.

God uses stone to build. He uses the earth, His creation

1 Peter 2

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

 9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Exodus 20

22And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

23Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

24An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

25And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

26Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

God is holy, wonderful, powerful, and awesome. He created the universe. He placed the earth where it is in space and all the stars in the sky. He caused every minute and massive detail to come into being. He placed boundaries on the waters of the deep and the sea.

Yet here God tells Moses not to use materials that man would eventually worship but to make an altar to Him out of the earth. If they chose stones to use then they were not to touch them with tools or modify them.

That is how we need to approach God when we come to worship.

We have reception through redemption

Yes we are His children, we are joint-heirs with Jesus. We have access to Him, and we know that He hears our prayers and that we can come boldly before Him and He will receive us

Hebrews 4:16
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

But we also have a responsibility

God doesn’t need anything that we can give Him. He doesn’t need that conference. He doesn’t need that money. He doesn’t need that worship that you gave Him this morning or that prayer that you threw out to Him in passing

He doesn’t need it….but He wants it.

He wants you to come to Him in love. He wants you to bless Him through your worship, in your walk with Him, and by your words.

God wants to bless us. He longs to bless us, and yet we constantly refuse that blessing from God by our actions and wrong intentions.

We usually don’t bless or honor God in our walk or by our words and especially though our worship.

Most of the time we can be guilty of looking for what we can get from worship. We get up, run to church, and then say “well what can I get from worship today?”

Is it sleep, or felling good, or getting a personal religious high from the service?

To whom does our worship belong when we gather?

What is our priority in worship?

Is it money? Is it gold or silver?

Do we come to worship in order to get back from God? Do we give our money to God in order to get some godly windfall back?

That’s just good business.

Our Lord says “Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.”

God doesn’t need a grand display in order to be worshipped. He doesn’t need all the trappings and trimmings that we think that He needs.

“Don’t make all these grand steps leading to My altar, you’ll just show your nakedness”

So many times we do pollute our worship and we show our nakedness, we disrespect ourselves and God by the tactless and unworthy display that we call worship.

When we come together to worship, we come to bless God and only God.

So then how do we worship God?

1. Recognize that God is real – not a fairy godfather

22And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

Sounds stupid doesn’t it but ask yourself if God is in your life.

Do you let God be real?

Is He your Father or Someone who you speak with occansionaly, when you wake up and go to sleep. Is our prayer life lead by need or greed?

Do we pray to God only when we need something or want something? If so then we will see a lot of needs and wants in order for us to just hear from Him

He wants to speak to us and He does so through situations, through others and especially through His Word.

Hebrews 1

1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

 2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

Jesus Christ is the Word of God!!!

John 1

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2The same was in the beginning with God.

3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Let God be real in your life and get into His Word and let Jesus be your Savior

2. Realize that God does not need you – He wants you

God doesn’t need what we can give Him. It is already His anyway.

Psalm 50

9I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.

10For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

11I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

12If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

.

We are not to worry about money, material possessions, or tomorrow because God owns that too

Matthew 6

19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

24No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

23Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

We tend to put these things before God because of necessity. I mean, we have to work in order to pay our bills.

Aren’t we supposed to work on Sunday if we are asked too?

When we do so though at the root we are putting something before the other. Jesus said it, we can’t serve both God and mammon, or money.

We can’t have God and then make gold and silver little gods. He wants all or nothing.

24An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

God wants His altar to be made from the earth. In those days they built altars in order to have God come down and bless them. Today we have the Spirit of God. He indwells us and He comes too us. We are now His temple, His altar, made from the earth and we have become the place where He records His name

John 1

10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

We don’t need to bring anything in order to worship God. We just need a heart ready to bless God in pure love as He has blessed us and loved us

3. Real worship is in Spirit and truth not man-created

25And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

John 4

19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We come together to worship and bless God. He is our only audience. Man is the secondary focus in worship. Ministers need to serve others by helping them and holding them up toward God but in the end God needs to be honored and His glory focused upon.

We worship God in Spirit. This means that we have His Spirit and we worship Him through His Spirit.

We need to be ready when we come to worship. I believe that it starts at home. Worship starts when we wake up and get ready. Our hearts should be right before we get to church and not after because we never know just who needs help and who God has sent in our path. Jesus rose early everyday to pray and to receive guidance from God. We need to do the same. We can’t pray for it while the problems wash over us because we will forget to even pray anyway most of the time because of the trouble

We also worship Him in truth – Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life so when we worship we focus on God’s Son, God in the flesh

This means by worshiping in the Spirit and in the Word, the Truth.

Not by our own opinions or ideas because when we do we pollute this cooperation between God and man

25And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

We also need to be ready when we come to worship. I believe that it starts at home. Worship starts when we wake up and get ready. Our hearts should be right before we get to church and not after because we never know just who needs help and who God has sent in our path

4. Religion does not play a part in worship

26Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

Religion, programs, purpose driven ideas, nothing has a place in true worship, only God.

He does not need us to build large buildings. He does not need immaculate wood carvings and high places in order for us to worship.

He wants us to worship Him in the Church – not the building but truthfully through the Bride of Christ, the true church.

He does not need large halls, great hills, massive building (there is nothing wrong with them) but when we focus on the building of the believer rather than the building of the believer in Christ, then we disgrace our Lord, we show our nakedness so to speak.

We also try to hide from God in church. We hide in being busy doing instead of just being in Christ. We can hide in baptism, membership, programs, and building projects. Again, there is nothing wrong with these things but we need to examine ourselves at all times to see if we are truly hiding from God through what we are doing

Genesis 3

7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Adam and Eve hid themselves because of their newfound sinful nature. They now knew that they were naked when before they had no problem because they were innocent.

Adam decides to clothe himself with his own righteousness. He wanted to do what only God can do.

21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

We can try to do the same thing with religion. We can try to cover ourselves with our own righteousness when that can only come through what Jesus Christ did on the cross!!

Take the righteousness of God and build upon the solid rock – Jesus Christ!!!
